Jina Belcher, NRGRDA
As an economic developer, I am no stranger to the obstacles communities face in attracting and retaining businesses. Lack of infrastructure, workforce shortages, and navigating the complex landscape of local and federal policies are among the traditional challenges we deal with daily. At the New River Gorge Regional Development Authority (NRGRDA), we’ve always known that these factors are barriers we must address when working to bring opportunities to Southern West Virginia.
However, there’s an unexpected and emerging challenge that we never anticipated: a community-inflicted negative narrative deterring business development and economic impact in our region.
In my role, I engage with business owners and investors who are excited by the possibilities of establishing operations in Beckley and Raleigh County. Our region’s strategic location, access to transportation networks, and the abundant natural beauty of the New River Gorge offer undeniable potential. Yet, despite these assets, we’ve encountered a narrative of pessimism that has taken root in parts of our community—a narrative that dampens enthusiasm and colors perceptions of our region’s future. A narrative that, in the last several weeks, has created pause for investors and businesses when considering Beckley – Raleigh County as their next location.
Whether it’s skepticism about local decision making or the sharing of false information, this negativity creates an additional barrier that’s more difficult to overcome than any physical infrastructure shortfall. It discourages potential investors and sends the wrong message to businesses considering making Beckley their new home.
The truth is, Southern West Virginia has the tools, talent, and tenacity to not only survive but to thrive. I see it every day in the work NRGRDA does to support local entrepreneurs, develop sustainable infrastructure projects, and advocate for economic diversification. But in order for our efforts to succeed, we need the full participation of our community in embracing the future and seeing the possibilities.
It’s time to change the narrative.
We need to recognize the power of community optimism in shaping our economic destiny. When we believe in our potential, we can demonstrate to investors and new businesses that Beckley and Raleigh County are places where they can grow and succeed. Economic development isn’t just about roads and buildings; it’s about creating a culture that invites innovation and celebrates progress.
As we continue to work on attracting new industries, we ask our community to reflect on the stories and information we tell ourselves and others about where we live. A negative narrative can become a self-fulfilling prophecy—but so can a positive one. Let’s take control of the narrative and show the world that Beckley and Raleigh County are not only open for business but ready to embrace a new era of growth.
