Young Life leaders have confirmed the intent to purchase agreement with several property owners in southwest Nicholas County. Fundraising for the $5M purchase is nearly complete and will result in 1,100 acres becoming the newest camp development for the international Young Life organization. The YL regional leaders are excited for the potential this camp will bring in enhancing the high adventure offerings for the young people that participate in their summer camps. Ultimately the camp will be a $35M development which will likely initiate in 2018 and take approximately 5 years to come to fruition. Young Life camps around the country have been operating at near and over capacity, thus the addition of this first camp in West Virginia is strategic regarding both location and amenity offering. Ultimately the camp will provide between 20-30 full time jobs with as many or more seasonal. As well, there will be 400-500 youth and chaperones from around the country weekly visiting our region and experiencing the very best that West Virginia has to offer. In off season the camp will be available for use by other nonprofit organizations.
Young Life’s goal is to use the property in a very limited fashion as early as the Summer of 2015 (pending completion of all sale transaction elements), then initiate development and expand utilization yearly, with ultimate goal being 4-500 campers weekly by 2020. All development dependent on private donation success.
