In April, the Beckley Beautification Committee met and President Jane Haga suggested a mural be installed on the retaining wall to beautify the YMCA parking area. Her vision was that the mural be completed by area youth. Community Development Agent, Christine Kinder, helped make that vision a reality. She landed on a rhododendron design to be completed during the Beckley Rhododendron Festival. The Downtown Beckley Business Association’s (DBBA) Public Art Committee Chair and Independence Middle School Art teacher, Carolyn Buzbee, agreed to organize her students to paint the mural. Jill Moorefield, Jim Chambers and Christine Kinder primed the wall so Susan Fotos and Carolyn Buzbee could draw the floral design. The mural is now complete, and is the first of many the DBBA Public Art Committee has planned.

Means Lumber Supply and Bill Kinder and Associates graciously supplied the materials needed to complete this project.
