The Downtown Beckley Business Association (DBBA) hosted its first event Beckley Underground’s Gold and Blue Halloween Football Bash on Saturday Oct. 29th. The Underground encompasses the plaza area located behind the businesses on Neville St. which include: Zen’s Café, Raleigh Playhouse and Theatre, Sir Walter’s Tavern, Melody’s Underground Pub, Tickety Boo Mercantile, Brown Dog Bottom, The Bake Shoppe and Taya’s & Abraham’s International Groceries. This event required communication and agreement between business and property owners, City of Beckley and many dedicated volunteers.

We had a very successful event which included Poncho and Lefty’s- Food Without Borders serving up delicious fish tacos, local artist Gary Vaughn selling his original work, local musicians Drew Bailey Lawrence playing at halftime and The Bringdowns who played to the crowd after the game. Zen’s Cafe, Raleigh Playhouse and Theatre, Sir Walter’s Tavern, Brown Dog Bottom and Melody’s Underground Pub all participated in making the Halloween Football Bash a success by showing the WVU game on multiple screens including in the 199 seat Raleigh Theatre. The Underground bars and restaurants offered drink specials and were busy throughout the day with people excited to be a part of the unique, new event in Beckley.

Beckley beer distribution company Mountain Eagle Inc. offered 3 West Virginia craft brews including Big Timber IPA, Big Timber Porter and Bridge Brew Oktoberfest. The craft beer was sold outdoors and enjoyed by those watching the game on an outdoor screen.

The DBBA was proud to serve as the host of this first time event promoting The Underground. Bringing people together to organize this event has helped unify our downtown and build stronger partnerships for future endeavors. This could not have been such a huge success without the help of all of our partners on this event, including Kid in the Background, Inc, and all the amazing volunteers we had to help the event run smoothly. We would also like to thank WVVA News, WVNS 59News, and The Register-Herald (Official) for the coverage.

We can’t wait to continue to bring these great events to you throughout the year, thank you for making our very first such a success! Take a look at the news coverage:
